The South Holston is fishing reasonably well but we wouldn't call it on fire. There are still some sulphers and the fish will key into them in the low water but once the generation starts they simmer down. Nymphing will still produce good numbers and you can sit in holes and catch multiple fish. Certain sections of the river will keep you busy fishing black ants in size 14 and beetles in size 12. There are a few summer cicadas left but they are also waning. The smaller fish will still seize an opportunity for a big meal though.
Our best success has come with streamers though and that has been our focus. Large patterns, some with stinger hooks are doing great in faster waters. Smaller "bugger style" patterns are doing well against the banks and the tail outs. The lower the light conditions the better the streamer fishing.
