May 19th, 2008
For G.R.Colford & Sons Limited on the South West Miramichi River from Doaktown to Quarryville. The water temperature is 54F and very clear in color. It was a very cloudy day on the river with some thunder showers this evening in the Blackville area. The barometric pressure started to rise this morning and then slowly started dropping again until staying steady this evening. The wind was out of the South West and the air temperature was 17C. The next few days they are calling for light rain and cloudy periods and highs to 19C to lows of 8C.
From the Doaktown area down to Quarryville there is still some anglers fishing for trout and Salmon. Very little sign yet of any trout of any size other than some 10 to 14 inchers being caught. There is also some salmon hanging around the river. I was with a buddy this evening Rick Trenholm he had a salmon take a dry fly that I tied for him at the mouth of Cain's River tonight around 6:30, a whiskers dry fly with a orange body. I also had a good trout or grilse take a Chief Needabah but I did not have a look at it to see what it was for sure. My son Zach got a small trout on a bomber he tied himself and a few more were going for it. Fiddle Heads are still not up in most places and it is likely to be another week before they are up good.
For those that don't know what a whisker fly is it is tied like this, 1st take a piece of yarn for the butt, 2nd take a piece of grey squirrel for the tail, 3rd I ty a double hackle in, 4th ty in your body with a piece of yarn of your choice of color, 5th your front wing is tied from deer hair, put your deer hair on before winding your body up to the wing. This fly was created by Louis Butterfield and I fished with him in my teenage days by the mouth of Cain's River . I caught my first 20lb salmon on this fly so give it a try.

Also if anyone is looking for some day fishing please give me a call I have some availability for May and June for trout and shad fishing and salmon if they are in. This also gives you a great chance to catch all three fish the same day.
I will be back in a day or two with more on the Miramichi River conditions and catches.
Tight lines,
Rodney Colford
