A Fishing Road

I fished New Hampshire and Vermont last weekend. The first night, I camped in Twin Mountain, New Hampshire. It is about 20 minutes north of Franconia Notch. Before fishing Profile Lake (so named for its position below a rock outcrop known as the Old Man in the Mountain that collapsed in 2003), I stopped at a collectible shop. The owner was a woman who was 90. She looked 70. This lovely lady grew up in Twin Mountain and was a World War II vet. She was also a fly fisher and was [...]

Fish the Water in Front of You

Every Memorial Day, I fish with my college buddies, Doug, Bill and Graham. We live far enough away that this is the only time we can get together. The boys and I fish an hour west of Ottawa in the Canadian heartland. It is spectacular fishing: five pound Smallmouth Bass and explosive Northern Pike. This is great except Doug, Bill and Graham spin fish, and I fly fish. I spin fish to be with them. This year, however, I was determined to fly fish.
    <p class="Mso [...]

"Why I Should Own the Wellston Inn"

The essay below was entered it in the "Why I Should Own the Wellston Inn" contest in 2000. The Wellston Inn is an historic inn on Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Upon submission of a 500 hundred word essay and $100.00 entry fee, the Wellston Inn could be yours, provided your essay was judged the winner.

To date, a winner has not been chosen and none of the entry fees have been returned.

                        [...]

The Pursuit of Happiness on the West Branch

In late April, I fished the Delaware River in the Catskill Mountains. My friend, Carlo, Maggie, my Miniature Schnauzer, and I drove five hours from Boston. We were meeting Chippy D. at the West Branch Angler in Deposit, New York. You could hear the river flow from our cabin porch.

Carlo is a Day Trader whose longtime girlfriend left him. She took everything: the house, the car, the bank accounts, etc. Even though she dropped the bomb [...]
