I was vacationing with my family last week in North Conway, New Hampshire. I managed to sneak in some fishing. Luckily, the rain stopped, and it was sunny most of the week. The water came down to a fishable level, and the temperature was in the low sixties (more like late spring than August conditions).
The terrestrial and steamer fishing were great. I fished the the fly fishing only section from First Bridge to the golf course. The water was so clear, you could see hundreds of trout below the bridge in the first section. Brookies were sporadically rising along this stretch. Below the First Bridge pool, there is a western looking brown trout set up between a rip-rap wall and a gravel bar. I took a 16 inch brown on a hopper in this stretch. It was a classic slow follow and gentle take.
Behind the golf course, in the deep pool, the rainbows and browns were hungry for weighted streamers. I caught a gorgeous 16 inch brown at dusk on a Sanchez Double Bunnie (my favorite all around streamer pattern) and a colored up 14 inch rainbow on a weighted Muddler. If the weather holds, the fall fishing should be fantastic.
