03/30/08 - TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE BEAUTIFUL WEATHER   [EDIT]
John Bottko

I finally got another camera after mine took an unexpected bath.  I will start posting again now that I can take some pictures.

Last week was beautiful weather with low tides early in the morning.  I went Thursday morning in the kayak and found a lot of fish on the last of the falling tide. They were fairly active but only for a short time.   As soon as the tide turned they disappeared.  During that first half hour of day light I landed one nice 25” red and lost another.  Both were hooked on the Black Perfect Minnow.

Friday morning was an exact copy of Thursday morning only I had an extra hour of tide to work with.  I was guiding Dave Petersen a fly fisherman from Atlanta.  We found a lot of fish but you didn’t know they were there until the boat would push them.   Dave kept putting flies in front of fish but couldn’t get one to hit.  Wakes pushing every direction but no takers.

The area we were in had a hard bottom and Dave had his waders along because our plan was to go to the tip of Little Talbot and wade the surf after the sun was high enough to see.  We let the fish settle down, anchored the boat and went after them on foot.  It made all the difference in the world.  The fish didn’t know we were there.   Dave landed a 28” eight lb. Red and lost another before the tide moved the fish into area we couldn’t wade.

On the tip of Little Talbot we found a number of Sheephead but couldn't get one to take the fly.
