Truckee River: Winter Regulations-Trout Creek to State Line-Catch & Release Only!
With warmer more stable weather for the official opener this weekend fishing should be good. This is the best time of year to catch and release a big rainbow or brown. The Truckee will fluctuate day to day now so check the flows before you go out. Flows are currently 196cfs at Truckee, 563fs at Boca, and 637cfs at Farad. Success is being had by dead drifting small midge and nymph imitations and large stonefly and copper john nymphs under an indicator. Action on top has also been good on BWO(baetis), adult midge, Skwala stones and recently March Browns. Water temps are around 45 degrees through California while temps on the Nevada side are around 48 degrees. Concentrate your efforts now on stretches of water that have a good current flow through it but still offers the fish a soft feeding lie as fish will still be conserving their energy with the changing flow rates this time of year. This is one of my favorite times of the year to throw streamers, so don’t forget your sink tip or sinking line on your spare spool.
