This is the best time of year to fish the Yakima River. Flows have stabilized and are low and clear. The weather is mellow and nice, there are diverse bugs both in and on the water, and wading access is excellent. October caddis are starting to pop, overcast cooler days will spur the BWO's, hoppers are still in the game...Seems like all tactics are effective right now, from straight nymphing to straight dries and everything inbetween. Hopper or big orange stimmy with a dropper, baetis nymphs, emergers, adults, october caddis pupa dredged along the bottom, streamers in the deeper channels...sky's the limit. A little observation can go a long way. The lower canyon is so wadeable it's silly, so for those of you who have been exiled to the upper reaches for the past few months, now's your time to invade the lower river. The highest consentration of fish is in the lower canyon, and they're easier to find in water conditions like we're seeing now since there are fewer places for them to hang out and feed. Check the weather before you go as we've had some hurricane like winds in the canyon...Go fishing and just be happy you don't have to be in Denver for the fly tackle dealer show.
